be kind to me/or treat me mean/i'll make the most of it/i'm an extraordinary machine
This post goes out to Matty, who actually has the original version & will no doubt be entertained at how much this differs. Clearly, this has been edited for content. I can't afford to have anyone else hate me.
it was a -- kinda weekend. When I got home on Saturday, Eddo & Rosa (a friend of his & Lily's) were in already- Rosa's brother was there too. (This was unexpected. --) They wanted to go into the city- so I changed clothes & we went out for a bite to eat. Then we went to this place called the Telephone Bar and had some drinks. Fred wanted to take us to this gay club Munster- which we did. Ehh. Not a club person. ---
Anyway, we got home at like 5 in the morning... only to be awoken by the people working on our attic at like 11. So, we went into the city for breakfast. Then we went to Old Navy, because Rosa & Edwin hadn't brought enough warm clothes... But the whole night before & that morning I just felt like a total 5th wheel. I think it's because I get really shy around new people- I just always felt like they were walking in a group & I was the afterthought. I was also REALLY fucking tired. So I skipped out saying that I was sleepy and came back to the apartment. They got home later that night & made dinner, but I'd already eaten. I actually spent like an hour on the front stoop talking to my friend Gilliane. Anyway, Fred left- and Rosa went to sleep, so Lily & Eddo and I watched "All I Want"- this Rufus dvd. At midnight. And went to bed around 2. And woke up at 5:30 to get ready for the bus. --
Went to take the infamous Chinatown bus (incredibly cheap fare, slightly sketchy buses is their rep- but the bus is actually pretty nice) at 7. --I ended up sitting with Rosa- who I'd only just met this weekend. I like her, she's really sweet & we bonded over Six Feet Under. -- Got in to D.C. at 11:30 ish, had tapas at this very pretty restaurant (--) then went to NPR, which Lily had been dying to take us to. We met her boss, who's Bill Wyman- he's actually mentioned a lot in Sarah Vowell's book RADIO ON. Super nice guy. It was really cool--
Um. anyway- we went on to Dupont Circle, which is pretty cool. Went to the HRC store-- Then we met our friend Marisol, who lives in DC and had some dinner. I even tried sweet potato fries, despite not really liking sweet potato. Then on to the concert & Rufus. The lead singer for the opening band, OK GO? SO hot. Like, if I could look like anybody else, I'd choose him. Concert was great- Rufus was amazing. -- There he is, singing "This Love Affair" which was sort of my theme song, "14th Street" with "why'd you have to break all my heart..."-- Once the show ended we had a while to kill before the bus left at 2, so we decided: CVS pharmacy's open 24 hours! But on the way our friend Gilliane called Lily-- So at dinner, Gilliane had called & Lily says "anyone want to talk to Gill?" but we were eating, so... no. Then when she called after the concert, Lily said the same thing- Edwin talked to her for a while and then gave the phone to me, because Lily didn't want to talk to her. I talked to her for a bit then hung up and when I gave the phone to Lily- inside CVS- I told her that if she didn't want to talk to Gilliane, she should just let it go to voice mail instead of having us talk to her. Because it's really mean that she's obviously there, we're on her phone- but she won't talk to Gill. I was a bit snappish, but there was also the whole sad/stressed/tired factor. It's not like I yelled or anything, I was just like- annoyed. So I went up to pay for my stuff (shampoo & Hershey's bar) and then we went out to catch the bus. And no one talked to me. And we went to get on the bus- I got on first. It was empty enough that we all had our own row to sit in. And I sat down on the left side. And they all sat on the right. And I just thought- FUCK they all think I'm a huge asshole. -- Then when we got back to NYC, once again they were all walking together & I was the one walking with no one at my side. Same thing on the train. I sat in one seat & they all sat behind me. So when we got off the train, I led the way home. Got to the house said 'goodnight' and went to my room to sleep (we got home around 7 and I had to work at 2). I woke up around 11:30 or so, and Rosa was already up. So I made waffles for us and then got in the shower. Then I went to the drugstore to pick up bread & peanut butter & the oh so crucial Chapstick- although I called my mom en route and ended up talking to her for 20 minutes, much of it close to tears. I got home and changed for work, deciding to go in early just to get some time to myself for a bit so that I could theoretically compose myself before work. Rosa was in the bathroom & Eddo was still sleeping on the futon. I kind of knocked on the bathroom door and said "I'm going to work..." but she didn't hear. Then I just sort of announced "Okay, I'm leaving now." Not a stir. So I left-- Only halfway down the street I really decided that I wanted to say goodbye. So I came back and kinda nudged Edwin and told him I had to go to work. He was not so awake and was just like "Okay... bye..." ----I was really stressed out because I hadn't talked with Lily at all- since snapping at her. Then when I got home that night, no one was awake. So I sent her an e-mail that was basically a journal entry about everything I felt this weekend, blah blah blah. The next morning we talked & were fine. And I even got to talk with Chris for a while, which was nice. Then I had to go in to work the Anne Rice signing at the store- but met up with Gilliane for dinner afterwards- we stayed in this diner for 2 hours, just talking. It was great- because we don't usually get to talk so much------ now it's just me and my ipod. And that's o.k.
love, rick
P.S. Rosa & Fred told me I looked a little like Peter Krause from Six Feet Under. That kind of made my weekend, despite it's complete inaccuracy. Sunday night's game night, kids, who's coming??
reading: just finished SPECIMEN DAYS by Michael Cunningham. planned on re-reading THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE, my favorite novel, but today I bought a book called URSULA, UNDER that looks promising. I think I'll still re-read the Niffenegger before I delve into the new one.
subject line: Fiona Apple "Extraordinary Machine"
watching: Nothing! I have to catch up on my TiVo stuff- all I've watched this week was DRAWN TOGETHER...
